1 GAL of Soil Per Week, or Month? How do you determine the Volume of you Pot?

I have never been so confused on something that should be so easy to understand!

I though i was growing in 3gal white square pots( <---the ones in my pic ) until someone at the hydro store said they were 5gal... WTF?

Jorge Cerventes said one gallon per month, my trusted hydro store ppl say its 1 GALLON PER WEEK OF VEG! Big difference. Jorge Cerventes does say to veg for 3-4weeks. That could justify his statement because plants build their roots in veg not flower, correct me if I am wrong.

Now I use Subcools SS, he said to use "#10 nursery pots, that hold 7gal of water"... okay i can go buy some #10's at my hydro store no problem. I would like to understand why though. I know with SS the soil is your food so you need enough of it, so does this mean he (Subcool) vegs for... 7weeks( 2month aprox )?

Last night i filled 10 #1 nursery pots assuming their each 1gal of soil. THERE WAS ENOUGH SOIL LEFT IN MY 1.5 CF BAG OF ROOTS TO PROBABLY FILL 10 MORE #1'S. ONE 1.5 CF BAG OF ROOTS SHOULD FILL 10 OF THOSE because 1.5CF of soil is aprox 10gals of soil, so a #1 nursery pot is 1/2gal or what?

Are my #1 nursery pots really 1/2gal?

Why is a #10 nursery pot called just that if it really holds 7gals?

SO I QUESS MY QUESTION IS HOW DO YOU BUY A POT AND KNOW HOW MUCH SOIL IT WILL HOLD, AND IS IT LIQUID MEASURE OR... WHAT?

IM JUST CONFUSED if you read this whole thing and know what I am missing please help me. :wall:

Sub, i watch all the weednerds, and have posted this question in the comments for episode #29

All i did was type your question into google...

A "GALLON" pot is also known as a "#1 TRADE SIZE". They do not actually hold a gallon of liquid or dry measure. Actual capacity is .78 to .98 gallon. The most common size at the garden center is a 1 gallon pot, referred to as a #1. Pot terminology is unique to the nursery trade. A 1 gallon pot only holds 3 quarts of soil in terms of liquid measure, but is still referred to as a #1. As for dimensions a #1 pot measures 6" wide by 7" deep and has a capacity of 183 cubic inches (6). Once the plant has been put into the pot, and some space has been left at the top for water, ten #1 pots can be filled with a cubic foot of soil. With 27 cubic feet of soil in 1 cubic yard, a nursery can pot up 270 #1 pots with a cubic yard of either soil or container mix. If #1's are placed pot-to-pot, in rows 12 pots wide, with 2.5 foot alleys between, approximately 2,700 #1's can be set out on 1,000 sq.ft. of ground.

as for how much soil to use, 1/3-1/2 the pot of ss and the rest is high quality organic soil.... pretty easy.

Cheesequake, veg 60. cut after 56.. 9 gallon, just under half ss..
