I would say over watering since you mentioned the soils condition but wouldnt rule out temp by the looks of them. What are your room temps? Also did you add any perlite to the soil?

I would think clipping the top would put even more energy into the lower bud resin production. When you clip it, the plant might take it as its life cycle is about to end and in a last ditch effort puts all its energy into resin production to try and collect male pollen before that happens
