I had good results with a 250W HPS in a homemade cool tube (it was some kind of pyrex baking tube) under a batwing reflector.

I let my WW go a little over 9 weeks, although mine did get very amber until 8+ weeks.

My preference, if the fan that circulates fresh air also cools the lamp, is to have the fan on its own timer that continues to run for an extra hour (or half hour if the timer has that option) after the light turns off to make sure the box does not retain heat from the lamp.

Definitely no. Lights in the blue/white spectrum like regular fluorescent bulbs and CFLs are okay for vegging, but for flowering the only way to mimic the sun's orange light and sheer intensity indoors is with good high pressure sodium HPS lamp.

Sounds promising. Make sure the seedling doesn't get too dry or too wet. A small container is ideal. Although you have to water more frequently it is more difficult to over water. Too much soil holds too much water that can drown a small plant.
