You don't need to test for pH in soil. I haven't tested for pH in several years now and I grow in coco.

Your yield will be affected by a smaller volume for root growth but nutrient uptake won't be affected. I've grown deep water through to full harvest in a 500ml pot before... also grown shallow water (a shared SoG) in 2" of water. You can also go overkill on the medium.
