What is the difference in outcome if you waited for the 5th or 6th node to top? Also best time to FIm?

Whats the best way to treat your tap water for soil grow? its getting old going to the store to pick up water.

I plan on topping, should I wait til it grows its 6th node then transplant into 3gallon then top? advice? not the newest pic, but its workin on the node now, and i see little roots thru bottom.
