Defoliate till you have the number of tops you want and scrog them nicely and I see fat buds coming also because the branches have thickened up during time and can hold more bud weight!

I have been growing a bushy strain and scrogging was key. I pushed the net down and pulled the main branches apart directly underneath. Defoliated the interior a bunch too. Individual plants looked like this at harvest. Had great bud formation all the way down.

Here's what scrogging did. This is one plant of 8, solid bud from top to bottom. Close to 3 gallons of trimmed buds now frozen and going into the freeze dryer tomorrow. 5 hours of solid work trimming.

I've done exactly that for my buddies tents, so they could fit a wider scrog net in the tent, and have a bigger canopy than normal.. Made the tent shorter, but enough slack to make the middle section a bit wider all the way around.
