You can but HID's are much better. They will grow a lot slower.

So I just transplanted one of my bigger plants, and I didn't use the smaller pots where the soil comes out in a big clump. I didn't just pull it out roots and all(obviously) I was just kind of wondering how exposed can the roots be until it puts itself into shock...

probably spiter mites...get some neem oil and spray on your plants on the top of leaves and bottoms too. It will kill the spider mites and there larvae on contact.
