The plant gets like 1% of the oxygen it needs from DO in the water. The rest comes from the hanging roots. You simply can't get enough o2 into the water. There is a DO limit. The vast majority of the root mass is below the water level.

I use 1" tube for returns and 1/2" for my feeders. I use 3/4" inch fittings and that 1" tube slips right over them and I hold them on with hose clamps. The tube I used was that light blue stuff and it let light in so I put duct tape over it which you can see in the photo.
