WOAH, 600w hps is a lot for seedlings... anyways you should keep that light off till you get some sprouts, its just gonna dry out your soil super quick and possibly cook your seeds if not carefull. Maybe think about buying a few CFLs, they are very cheap and great for veg. HAPPY GROWING!

At that age the root structure would be minimum. Go out about 3" all the way around, you will be fine just make sure you go deep enough, the tap-root is probably a good 6 inches down by now. Be carefull and GL. I found a plant a few years back, turned out to be male, ahh... the possibilities...

Yes, I only scrap the outer layer of skin off with the razor up about a half inch or so. I believe it helps because this area is always covered in roots first. Also, cloning from the bottom roots faster because these nodes have less nutrients, mainly nitrogen than those taken higher up. Good...
