Honestly, one good reason is that in some states you can avoid felony weight by growing autos. It is much better to get caught with misdemeanor amounts of weed. This works if you just grow for your own personal use and are not a heavy user.

Speaking of stability, I was originally going to buy feminized easy ryders for my first autos. Thing is, the nonfeminized are cheaper and mainly, I would just as soon limit how many times I buy seed. If I bought nonfeminized and let the first grow go to seed, would the seeds be stable?

I second this idea. Mulch is really very effective. Amazon.com also sells dry water. I have never used it though.

Vermiculite helps retain water when it is mixed in soil but I don't think it would help on the top of the soil. What about a basic drip irrigation set up with a timer on your outdoor faucet?
