I tried a few time without clonex (im a user) and the roots seemed the same but I lost around 25% of them before roots came. I think clonex is good for making sure you don't get stem air bubbles as much as it is at actually getting roots going.

Assume it has a special thermostat then as well. Chances are it varies the trigger voltage as a signal to the unit as to how much draw to use but your right, the basic on off triggers would probably just end up being MAX and OFF. Wish I had a split AC damnit.
