HPS is not the best CCT (color) for veg. You can do 9 plants with CFLs or MH. I do believe either will provide you with better results. If you decide on CFLs there are many here who can advise you on which ones and how many.

I do not think you are going to generate enough heat to "warp" glass. You may wish to used tempered glass. My HPS lights are in a housing with a glass front, so for me the issue is partially solved, though I am conidering this option also.

I used MG and did fine until I had to flush. Compacts really bad. Needs much more perlite. I know this is not Scotts, but I suspect about the same quality.

IMHO, too little light of the wrong color and maybe too much water. Do you have a water meter? For Veg you want 6500k. 26w (I believe this light is 1600 lumens) is way too little. I would veg 1 plant with 4 26w 6500k. I am currently vegging 5 with 10 26w 6500K and 5 18w "grow floros." The setup...
