Generally I already have preflowers as well when I go 12/12. Some strains seem to take longer and if there are no preflowers I start counting from the time I see the first hairs.

The light from CFLs do not penitrate as much as a HPS would so I place them around the sides and on the bottom. Doing this will help with coverage. Still not as good as the picture above but if your only using CFLs it will help optimize the lights you have.

I have had plants show sex in veg stage several times. Seems some strains will do it consistantly. It seems that I see sex during veg its around week 6.
