CFL's aren't as efficient as HID lights, and also their ballasts are what produce most of the heat. CFL's have the ballast attached to the bulb, which means it will be in the grow area too. HID's usually have remote ballasts that can be out of the area where the bulb is reducing the ambient...

300 watts of CFL's isn't going to produce any less heat then 300 watts of HPS..
