Your guess would be as good as mine as to why it liked outside much better. The suns spectrum/intensity is what might have made the difference, how far away is your light? The only other thing that i can think of is the plant thought it was time to flower and the growth then exploded

What kind of air movement do you have in your grow room

If you planted them as early as you say you did then i believe hdf is on the indica side and should finish in time. As for the dark star i have never heard of the strain

It will start to veg in about 2 to 3 weeks after you turn the lights, growth is mostly stopped in that timeframe

hps and a stronger fan exhasting would be better overall but you may able to get away with a 300 watt cfl and a fan blowing on the tops of your plants
