Intersting... I think there are many factor at play. Strain, growing temps, temp differential, humidity, co2 levels, soil density, nute levels and stress all play a roll in plant size and amount of stretch.

don't keep the soil wet. Just a bit more than damp. The roots need to breath, to wet and they will rot.
