Dwezelitsame hit the nail on the head. Everybody has their own way. Once flowering starts leave her to do her thing as much as you can. Before flower you can top to your hearts content. Even if the plant is three foot high you can still top so don't sweat it.

Normally you would want to do the topping during veg in order to create new branches and bud spots. You can start topping at any point during veg and it should be O.K. Its better to leave the plant when she starts flowering to prevent to much stress. Hope this helps.
