You never know who's kidding and who's not. I know people that use their own piss to add nitrogen and swear by it (on a personal note I would never touch let alone smoke anything that has urine in it. there are better ways IMO to add nitrogen than piss)

I think you had a problem other than your soil, I use MG moisture control and have never had a problem with it.

The clear cups are a good idea so you can see root growth, but you also need to have something to cover them up with so no light gets to the roots. This is the way I did it, I used 9oz clear solo cups and 18oz blue solo cups they fit inside of each other perfectly might work for you too
