you CAN start your plants on a 12/12 light cycle but they will be much smaller. Most people start by giving there plants 24 hrs of light a day to let them build up some size (vegetative stage), and then switch them to a 12/12 light cycle sometime after 2 weeks to initiate the plants flowering...
