Running the lower wattage lamp will work, it will burn with more intensity, and it will also die quicker... I would recommend a 600W MH, so u are at the correct wattage of your 600W HPS kit... Good idea to be using a MH for now though... Alot of folks dont realize that HPS's will burn MHs, but...

U will definately notice a difference in veg growth with that 400W MH though... They should perk up and start a more rapid growth cycle...

Dude, a 600W MH lamp shouldnt cost u more than like $40, and if someonez chargin u three times that, then u r getting sooo ripped off... Furthermore, a non-digital ballast, is a magnetic ballast, and I would definately recommend using a MH for veg, and your HPS for flowering, if u only have one...

Yes... The ballast was overheated, and had to cycle itself, and re-start... Simple...
