yes and no, in a regular water bong or pipe your sucking on the end is what creates the suction not gravity. with a gravity bong the gravity is pulling down the water that is creating the suction, not you...make sense?

for sure a nute problem from looking at the pic. could be nitro deficiency. check the deficiency table in growfaq. see if you can find its symptoms on there and match to a nute. It might be nute burn looking at it again 10-10-10 is not really good
