Are you using rockwool? The root system does have to be decent before its transplanted. But they should be fine. Try misting them a couple times a day or get humidity domes for the first week or two.

natural sand in the mix is fine, just not manufactured sand (alot of chemicals) And it should be like beach sand and totally non cohesive without any silt. It's like perlite and helps drainage.
