yeah, top nodes are alright to use as a cutting. lower cuttings have more rooting hormones in them, and less nitrogen (better for rooting, but if you are going to top anyways for height reasons, might as well try to root the top)

carbon filters are supposed to last 1 yr with hobby grows, 6-8 months with big commercial ops. ofcourse if you have bought a filter that is bigger than you need, your mileage will vary accordingly.
