You can, your buds won't be as dense and your yield will be considerably lower than if you'd used an HPS. Make sure you use 2700 k tubes.

I did it recently without any problems, but it was only a couple weeks into 12/12 and I took only lower branches

HPS is gonna get hot in that small space, get a bunch of CFL's (like 4-6 per plant) it'll be cheaper and cooler. Try to find Seemore Buds book on growing with CFL's, it's called something like "grow 8oz of bud for less than $100", I read it a while back, lots of good info in there
