I think you are right about not being able to add and divide the individual bulbs. an average does not mean that you are only getting that part of the spectrum. however, I think having 2 different spectra does mean you will get more of the middle part than either one alone. I'm thinking...

that's why I supplement my 6500K with a few 2700K (3 to 1 ratio). my average ends up about 5550K. of course, to be really scientific instead of taking the manufacturer's word for it I should get a device and measure the actual spectrum from the bulb, but that might be overkill :-)
