you can still top it but you arent going to see a HUGE split like you would have if it was topped earlier.

exactly, the lumins deminish very quickly with cfls. you had them wayyyy too far away. you want them to be as close as possible, without burning your plants. i think i keep my 400watt MH closer than what you had your cfls at
