    Switching to 12/12 question

Some people like to run their 12 hours of darkness during the hottest part of the day to help with heat control. I personally prefer having the lights on during the times when I work with them the most, so I don't have to use a green light to see them.

    Vegg/flower cab. Scrog grow!

Disposable aluminum trays are great for DIY CFL reflectors. They are fairly cheap and can be found at just about any grocery store. As for how close; I myself have never used a 300 watt CFL, but I would guess 8 to 10 inches away maybe?

    Are blacks lights okay?

Don't just get any spiral, cfl bulb. Make sure it's the right spectrum. 2700k or 6500k is good light for growing plants. Walmart has a 12 pack of 23 watt, 2700k CFL bulbs for $24.00 right now. That would be enough light to get some pretty good results. Good luck!

    bad reflector?

The plant will grow closer towards the light source if its trying to get more light. The cheap reflector probably isn't guiding the light very well. Your plant staying shorter isn't necessarily, a bad thing.

    Confused about BULBS

Rust naturally occurs in soil because of the iron. Rust will not hurt plants. Besides, we're both using aluminum, which doesn't rust.

Yet another occasion where magnetic ballasts are better. Use some cfls to keep your plants in sync until you can scrap the cash to buy a magnetic ballast, or an RF shielded digital ballast.

Is it safe to use an aquarium filter on my dwc system?

Fish tank filters won't prevent algae. Also, the carbon in the filter would absorb too many things that your plant needs to use.
