I've got 4 ak48s under a 400w hps in a small closet and there growing like weeds !! They drink well over a gallon a day I just started flowering last night. You will do great with a 400 and 3 plants !!

Go for the hid lights You can get a nice 400 watt hps and get a conversion mh bulb that will work with the same ballast. Veg with the mh and flower with the hps. Some like dirt but before you decide check out the bubbleponic tutorial here you just might change your mind ! I'm just about done...
