fox farm is real good you can get the organic soil which is in a light blue bag i believe.. you mix the fertilizer (some ppl call it nutes btw) in with the water (most of the time in water,) and it will have a ratio of for example, 1 Tbs to 1 gallon of water or whatever it is for your fert.

foxfarm has good soil and nutes, good organics.

from my experience having the fan too close is bad but you need circulation, so keep it as close as possible without having the plants blown around a bunch..(especially young plants)

water can cause mold if you do not have holes at the bottom. its gotta be mold man, or maby you just got some stinky stinky shit bro..
