Check the HP site for the software written for Ubuntu for your printer/scanner (it's likely they don't have any written for it.) I don't know anything about ubuntu so if it were me and there is no software for ubuntu, I'd reconfigure the machine to dual boot Ubuntu/XP ;)

So what I think you are saying is that the software that comes with the printer/scanner doesn't run on Ubuntu.... is that correct? Have you tried the HP site for the software that will run on Ubuntu? EDIT: WTH??? You edited your entire first post :wall:

I would not use sand from a seaside beach.... it will have way too much salt in it. I have no idea how much rinsing it would take to get the salt out of it.

I'm pretty sure that PH 7.0 is fine for soil. Don't adjust it unless you see problems with your plant.

Start them in soilless starter plugs in a float tray. Then when ready to put in the DWC you just put the plug in the hydroton. Simple Here's a picture of what I'm talking about
