I take care of the overfeeding problem by using a very light soilless mix (roots organics greenlite) It drains fast, aerates well, and still holds moisture for a few days. I can still give a full strength feed though because most of the solution will drain out the bottom in a few minutes.

I think some people have just set their expectations too high on cheap fixtures. You can't expect to replace an HID system for less than the cost of the ballast, bulb, reflector, and fan in my opinion.

I read you just need to flush it out real good to remove any remaining dust from the manufacturing process. I grew using hydroton once and I just gave it a good rinse until the runoff water was clear. I always thought it was rockwool that needed to be soaked in ph'ed water before use.
