Aren't you concerned with the major blow the floral hormones in the plant take once there topped? it can take up to a month before they are back to full power again. If they don't have time to get healthy again you'll experience diminished yields.

I keep my 600w about 12-14" away from canopy but I also don't have any heat issues it stays at 74-75 at canopy.

from my experience my plants grown under a 400w hps grow 80%-140% after switching to 12/12. But thats just my set up. basically double in size give or take 6"

just a side note on minimum lighting I started tomatoes a month ago (or so) and I keep them under my t5's normally for 18hr, This year I decided to put 2 in the flower tent. Man what a difference, I wouldn't recommend going below 16hrs.

Last year I would add a nice top layer around certain plants in the garden and they loved it! I'm not really stingy at all, all of my plants get it in there pots starting out. why not just take the used SS outta the pot and mix it in the garden, surely one plant doesn't use everything.

Once you get a good mix down you won't have that problem I guess it'd prolly be best to do pots untill you found that sweet spot. But too little is better than too much you can always just give them teas... I love just having to water only I probably only open my tent every three/four days...

What draws me towards a box is it would be pretty cool to have a nice thick carpet of living mulch.
