and with regards to the lighting situation how long before i introduce the more light? i can raise all the lights or lower them as and when so could i stick all my plants straight in there but have the lights up high then as they mature bring them closer or will that cause the plant to stretch...

Just do as your father says it not worth the risk if you are serious aboput wanting to grow see if you know someone who lives by themselves if they will do it if you give them a cut in it. or try and rent yourself or plant somewhere out the way and just look after it go back once every 2/3 days...

topping is basically when the plant is at nice height before flowering right at the top. just cut it to stop the bush growing upwards then instead it thickens/bushens more then the same procedure can be applied if needed to the side stems hope this makes sense.
