Hello old friends,

Anyone got experience with these aliexpress meanwell clones? Picked a couple up for $33 AUD and out of the box they do what they are supposed to.

I've blown up a LOT of those...

A couple things to know:
Don't let them get hot.
Don't run them at full capacity - 60-70% capacity max with good excellent airflow.
Learn how to use a multimeter. They are easy and cheap to fix.
Learn how to solder. (you will burn yourself... well, I still do).

Not a fan of the 0-nV type of SWPS (but I have 3 or 4). They usually charge a couple extra bucks and I can get them in almost any voltage, so the zero-to-something isn't my first choice. I do replace all the 1k potentiometers with multi-turn 10k's. It provides a lot better accuracy with trying to dial in your wattage and you can buy a bag of 10 for less than $2. Note: sometimes the 10k's allow you to turn the voltage down past some of the 'safety' measure in these SWPS... it may act 'weird' if you turn it down too low. The 'weird' varies by SWPS, but you'll know it when you see it.

They are not water proof, so I mount them outside of the tent and run 12g CCA automotive wire inside nylon braided PET with Anderson Power Pole connectors... yes, there is line loss, but I only run about 8 ft. I think it's minimal (it's probably not, idk).

My first purchase of this type of SWPS was when I bought an 5M LED strip with 5630 Seoul diodes. I de-soldered it down to 50CM strips and put on a piece of sheet aluminum. The Aliexpress estimate for how many watts needed was way off... I went through three SWPS before I got it to light for more than an hour. It makes me laugh now, but it wasn't funny then...

Nice one thanks for your input.

I have added brackets to mount them off the wall and they will be away from any potential watering.

The little voltage adjustment was surprisingly smooth, i could dial it in to 0.1 of a vault easily so have set it to 48.0V now to match the F strips I am running off it.

Im interested to see how it goes, have finished building just need to wire it up and switch it on later day.

Cheers,

i agree with what mumble said, this style of power supply is very easy to fix if you take your time, i use different variants of them for different projects on my test bench, if you don't have some already invest in some x10-40 glasses, a solder iron with a adjustable heat, (i have cheap, butane, nice, get one that fits what you need it for and you won't need another) and possible a parts holder so you have both hands when soldering
