Baker's Best: take 3

I don’t think you can jump to the conclusion that all plants with thinner leaves are sativa or all of them are more of a cerebral high, but you can imo say that it is a strong indicator. For instance, I have never seen a pure indica, or anything even claimed to be pure, that doesn’t have wide leaves. It gets confused the more the hybrids are around muddying the gene pool. Don’t get me wrong, some hybrids are among the best strains, it just gets harder to depend on leaf width to judge for certain, but as a general rule thinner leaves are sativa leaning, and extremely thin leaves are heavy on the sativa side, and will produce a more cerebral effect. You’ll find yourself turning up the music and get something done rather than watching a movie or sitting on the couch.
Totally agree. I'd also throw flowering time into the equation. Typically a variety claiming to be nearly pure sativa that flowers in 10 weeks or less is going to be a different beast than a 14-20 week sativa.

Effect is also a bit confusing. Generally I like stuff that doesn't leave me feeling tired, and has more of an energetic kick. Tons of hybrids out there fit the bill, while at the same time there's plenty of more true-blooded sativas that'll leave you tired by the end.

In other words, it's easy to talk in generalities, but there's always outliers.

I'm with you on the little energy tick instead of feeling zonked/zombie glued to the couch. I'd love to get a land race sativa that takes 4-5months to flower, though I dont think I have the experience to not ruin it, I dont even measure pH bc all the cheap methods are incredibly unreliable and I ain't got the dough to buy $80+ pH thermometers lol

This current grow I messed up somewhere. I did the "less is more" watering and feeding in the sense of amounts, maybe too much. Plus that 5 day period memorial weekend when I came back and them babies were DRY! :wall:. I fed nitrogen thursday, and the Lions Pride(2- 5.5- 5.5) has some N, so I thought giving a ~1/2 dose of (5-1-1) would be plenty to slow the leaf decay. Pretty soon I'll only have sugar leaves!

I'm a bit at a loss. My noggin keeps saying flush and just do a healthy normal dose of Lion's Pride, Which according to the bag is decent stuff. What do you guys think that have actually followed the grow some?

Lightened/edited this one below to make structure more visible. I have some hope for the short flimsy girl to give me a solid cola if I make it.
PXL_20250608_130326841~2.jpg

I swear It still looks like nitrogen deficiency. Which even if soil PH wasn't that good, nitrogen is able to be uptaken? Uptook? almost the broadest range of soil PH out of all nutrients. Trying to figure out what to do by midday, when I'll water+feed again. Lion's pride below

You had some nute burn going on earlier in the grow. I think the frequent salt/nute additions combined with getting too dry is causing you problems. There isn't really a good reason to flush soil (coco grows are the only ones that ever need it). I'd relax on the nutes a tad, and keep that soil more hydrated to avoid salt build ups during the dry back. I'm in soil, and in flower my plants get watered (with feed) every day at lights on. Watered to minimal/no drainage.

I ended up giving her a moderate flush. Normally I only water about 48oz(3 red cups) each. This time I put a gallon through each with decent run off. The encouragement came from several folks having the thought of potential salt build up and acidic soil.

Did the moderate flush at 3pm yesterday so I'll see what they look like after work.

Day 79 from seedling

Well it's only been a day and a half, but I really expected them to be almost leaning over from over watering, but they look alright. Buds look like they swelled some as well. I did throw an avg nitrogen feeding via another 15oz of water each yesterday since the yellowing is continuing and I likely flushed a lot of what I added before.

Not very trichome heavy compared to my previous grows, but it looks like it'll make it to smokeable and hold me over till my next tent filled run.

Day 83 fron seedling

Well I definitely believe the moderate flush did some good. The buds have grown. More noticeably on the lower nugs, and in turn making a solid cola look on the short girl. Also, I swear the lower areas of the plants have fan leaves that have grown. I've never really noticed that occuring this late in flower.

Day 87 from seedling

Watered them this morning, no nutes. Just grabbed these pics. The shorter girl is ready based on stigma's, but Trichomes are 95% cloudy with only a few amber and nore clear than Amber. She should definitely be ready to harvest in a week or so. The taller girl though :wall:, she just keep spitting out new stigma! So that tells me she has a good bit more in her. Probably 3 weeks minimum.

Close ups of short girl's trich's, 2 seperate top buds.

Again they aren't very frosty, but in about a month I'll experience her smoke and see if trich's are everything lol.

Think I'm going to chop the smaller girl Sunday. The yellowing is creeping closer to the cola/sugar leaves. Though again the lower budsites seem healthy. And I swear fan leaves are growing there lol but I didn't think they would this late in flower .

Day 91 from seedling
PXL_20250622_221739617.jpg
After the 3 day weekend, returned and sure enough the short girl has cannabolized herself some more. I am able to see a few amber trich's on the actual buds, but I'm still seeing a fair bit of clear IMO. So I watered her one last time.

The tall girl is damn near stagnant. She's growing, but I just dont have the right conditions. It was 84 degrees in tent when I got home. Need to improve my closet grow capabilities, particularly tent temp. I have doubts the smoke will be cery good, but even if its just a comfy, relax buzz - take what ya can get!

Day 96 from seedling

Well this grow experiment has come to a close, at least half anyways. Gonna chop the short girl tonight. Her trich's I'd like to see more amber, but she's good enough and my roommate is back so climate control is back out the window. Could say I'm tired of growing in subpar conditions(partially my own fault).

So just to refresh any readers, this was a 12/12 from week 3. With the goal of harvest preferably by end of June, jarred for the long haul by end of July 1. The tall sister beside this one I'm chopping pretty much looks the same as the pictures above. We'll see if one light removed- which should drop the tent temperature, will help any.

EDIT: Decided to let her go one more day.

Chopped her last night. Got em in brown bags drying with a hygrometer. I'm imagining a 5day+ drying process, they feel fairly dense/heavy.

Also this is a bit of a nubcake thing, BUT Because of the shitty temps in house, I had to leave my tent open some with an 18" fan blowing in(angled at the lights - heat source), tent was getting to 85!!! So, Those weekends I left I couldn't be home to zip it up. I covered my room window with blankets over the blinds to try and black it out some, but my internet modem in the closet (location of tent) did emit green/yellow from the ethernet cable plugged in. The last week I started zipping the tent up at night because temps were normal(68-72 in house). These last few days(gotta be the true darkness) she bulked some, and the taller girl started changing from all white stigma to some orange/brown.

I believe my lack of absolute darkness played a big roll in development, but I also didn't know what would be worse - cooking them in the high temps or having a mild light source exposure. Still don't! Lol

But satisfield with the outcome anyways.
PXL_20250628_000209943~2.jpg

Might be hard to tell in the image, but half the white/yellow stigma's have finally started to turn orange/brown on the taller girl.

Be really amazing if she starts bulking a fair bit. 20% fatter bugs by harvest and I'll be happy.

Well i quick dried a bottom little nug from the lowest branch.

Method: in its own brown bag in a room with ceiling fan on, early afternoon today I put it on top of the grow light, this evening I broke it down across aluminum foil shaped into a ditch and put the ditch atop my toaster's bread slot, medium setting one time.

And I am FOCKIN APPY! :blsmoke:. Creeps until about 20min after toke, gives a moderate mental stimulation then levels off into just comfort. Very stress relieving in the sense of my OCD/ADHD excessive concerning completely disappears. Comfortable.

Can't wait to try some dried properly in a week or so.

Day 99 from seedling

Called maintenance and our AC/furnace drain was clogged, back to 68-72 degrees in apartment!! Bags are staying 66-70 degrees and 58-65% humidity. I check my brown bag drying nugs about every 6hrs the first couple days. Make sure they 1) get rotatated/moved around by tapping bottom of the bag enough that they dance around - the less you direct touch the better. 2) make sure humidity and temp is good. They spiked to 70% humidity yesterday when apartment was 80 degrees, so i chose to break the colas down - I usually leave them for 2-3 days to encourage a slower dry, and leave the bags open on a chair under the ceiling fan.

Now that I have one chopped and drying, I'm going to really try to stretch this last one out and see if I can get at least 30% amber trichs.
PXL_20250629_165620245.jpg

First 2 pics are the 2 tallest/main branches, followed by a low nug on a bottom branch.

Day 101 since seedling

I'm super happy with how this grow is finishing. Much better than I thought it would go when I reserved myself to expect the worst after the hiccups. Since the AC got fixed(drain was clogged) I can close my tent up. I swear that absolute dark is making the difference.
PXL_20250701_215207639.jpgPXL_20250701_215235916.jpg

The lower nugs on these branches are growing decently - which is what has me happy/excited, but the first pic of nugs used to look like the little feller in the second pic just 7-10 days ago.

So happy you made it to harvest! Stay focused and your grows will improve.
Thanks brother!!! It's amazing what this crop can do, recover from, and produce. And each grow I learn something. I had this thought that "ehhh absolute darkness is overrated, excessively implied"....NOPE Hahaha. Granted I'd have continued closed tent if I could, but home environment >:(:hug:lol. Also with my nutrients, 2/3rds to 3/4th dosage once every 3 waterings is better than 1/4th dosage every watering. Another one that I think is major - during mid flower onward in my 3 gal fabric pots, flushing has basically no ill/overwatering affects.

Day 106 from Seedling

Decided to chop the last girl today. She definitely got filled in better than the other, slightly more trich's and I'd say 5% amber. As I was wet trimming her - works better for brown bag drying when dry room is 50-60% humidity, the lower nugs I snipped into a container had a satisfying thunk(density ). The smell was better, more skunky than the 1st.
Under LED(1st), window sunlight(2nd)
PXL_20250706_211832652.jpgPXL_20250706_211736734.jpg
Close ups of nuggets.
PXL_20250706_211408470.jpgPXL_20250706_211054655.jpgPXL_20250706_204656859.jpg

The first two nugget shots were in the sunlight from the window hence different hue. Looking forward to trying her in a week.

Lessons learned:
- flush before flip to flower to help salt build up
- unless on a timetable, let em veg a healthy 5-6 weeks at least. The amount of effort was the same, but harvest did not come that much quicker and yields are half easy.
- absolute darkness does indeed make hell of a difference lol
PXL_20250706_223814503~2.jpg

Again not super frosty, but between the high heat and moderate light exposure, I'm happy.
