New School vs old school strains

I was talking with a fellow grower yesterday and he brought up an interesting point once we inevitably started talking about the fabled Runtz strain.
He claims these modern strains are really just trying to be these older strains like Northern Lights, White Widow, AK47 etc etc etc

I personally don't agree and think that them older strains have paved the way for us to get to the point we are out now, But on the other hand i do hear of people still chasing those "less exotic" varieties.

Curious as to what yall think

I personally only smoke marijuana that has been mentioned in rap songs.

I'm going to play middle of the fence and say I I'd say they're imitating the old school but more so as like 2.0 versions. The modern takes on classics. I have a personal theory that the cannabinoid contents going down and the Thc percentage going up was due to huge modern new breeding pool that arrived around the 80-90's. With that being said the weed now is 100 percent different.

I just finished a plant from AK Bean Brains called Darien Gap. It's a Columbian Gold/Panama Red x TKNL5. Crazy frosty. Got 2 phenos, one a short squatty plant that finished at 10 weeks, and 1 making huge spears, thats probably gonna be a 12 or 13 week plant. Check out the AK thread, I recently posted some pics in there.

Absolutely. I personally like to see people pushing things forward and embracing change. I like to think the idea of breeding with these traditional genetics was to start introducing some more desirable traits such as hints of purple, higher THC, higher CBD in search of amplifying them older strains

And just which one of those older strains is Runtz trying to be like? IMO, those three older strains you mentioned are pretty weak sauce in comparison to more modern strains. Has your buddy grown many modern strains, or is he just speculating?

Funny that i find alot of modern genetics lacking punch some are potent alot are just more tasty tho and nice looking i find thc aint the best guide to potency anyway theres so much more that shapes the experience i like old and new genetics but i cant lie i prefer older varieties due to more varying effects to each to there own ig

6 older strains that were documented. It seems like genetic documentation wasnt as popular or practiced back then for legal reasons i assume. But im inclined to agree i have seen some breeders intentionally breeding “vintage” strains and i like it

Is Blueberry considered a "vintage strain"? Or is that just because DJ Short was on the panel? When I head "old school strains", I think of strains like haze, hindu/afghan kush, skunk. Maybe add jack herer, northern lights, AK47, C99, etc..

He might have made the recipe more recently but the ingredients can be considered oldschool if the tale is correct. Maybe cherrybobeddie confused the BB with another one of the building block strains in the comment above?
