First time autos. stupid question..

Soo. i started a couple of auto seeds and solo cupped them in soil and it's time to move them.. My other plants are dwc i was just gonna do these in soil. Am i losing a lot by not going dwc? since i seem to get a lot faster growth in dwc would a auto benefit more from that? just hate to setup more dwc when i have soil laying around anyway :)

Hi I, If you want weight defo go for DWC. I ran a couple of autos (RQS cookues auto) in soil in 8 & 15 L pots under a 300w actual draw full spec LED. (from what I read 15L is considered max optimal pot size for soil)
wet weight (yield) was aprox 3 Oz dry 1oz. For both sizes. Ruderalis is not to my taste but growing was a breeze.
As you know Dwc will yield more due to (all factors permitting) faster growth. If I was trying auto in soil again I'd up the wattage from mid veg onward.
Perhaps run an organic feed in soil just to compare against your DWC herbs? I tried a relatively cheap organic feed at 1st and have since opted for mid price range.
Good luck which ever you choose.

Thanks for the input... 1oz dry is painful :( Mainly want to see if autos are as weak as a buddy says.. not telling him i'm growing them and will have him try it :) will figure out which way to go later today. hate making choices :)

You should always sow auto seeds in the final container. Not in cups for transplant.

I run all my autos at 18/6 is plenty, 20/4 doesn't hurt, 19/5 while you're thinking about it. I definitely would not run 24/7 that's for sure. Autos express themselves better with hydro, and you need that fast response if you want to defoliate and top which auto also respond well to. I occasionally think about putting a plant in some soil just for the hell of it seeing there's plenty of light spill, then I come to my senses.

I ended up going coir.. Don't wanna spend the money on more DWC stuff right now.

I just want to throw out there that Mephisto is easily the top auto breeder at the moment and on their website in their grow tutorial they grow their plants on 24/0 light schedule. You should look into them if you have not already.

The final way I've settled on is sowing a dry seed into an eazy plug, soak the plug mash the hole a bit and bury the seed a few millimetres, cover and put in a dark place not too cold and they'll be up in a few days and ready to put into anything from clay to soil. Soaking the seeds is entirely unnecessary if done like this and you do not damage the superfine hairs that you cannot see.

Yeah, i always do the wet paper towel in a zip lock. have had 100% success it's int he first 2 weeks in rockwool i kill em. Soil they never die sadly, and i hate soil :)

I didn't know about the risk of damaging superfine micro hairs on a seed. How can I tell if they're damaged? What happens if the hairs are damaged?

absolutley nothing

there are so many people saying do this , dont do this ... its a very resilliant plant. You think a plant that is fine with people lopping tops and leaves off it like nobodies business and bending them every way and shape mind if you damage a few little root hairs? lol. I use to use the paper towel method for years no problems at all. Now i sow them in the dirt directly and it works equally good however its a bit annoying as you dont know if the seed is viable until youve already waste a week waiting for it to come up. so im going to go back to the paper towel method.

also in regards to the light schedule , also not true imo that they need "as much light as possible " up to and including 24 hours of light. First of all its a bit naive to think that an organism that has evolved over billions of years on the earth with a day and night cycle doesnt use the night period for certain things. In my experience the plants do the most growing over night when the lights are off. I also ran my first auto with no timer and gave it usually about 12-14 hours a day and had a fantastic yeild .

Autos NEED a slightly longer day ( 18/6 minimum) to allow its short veg stage the best chance to setup its rootmass as quickly as it can before transition stage. If you run autos less than that you will impact size and yield.

Autos will flower on its own , no matter what schedule. Unless it stalls ( and there are some tricks you can do to resume ) but thats another subject. During dark time , plant will metabolize the days energy it received. Many run 24/7 or 20/4 but 18/6 is the most general light cycle used. For Hempy bucket autos , i run 20/4 since this method grows autos quite large . I grow a lot of autos under one light cycle 18/6 ( soil ) in a perpetual setup - flowering / vegging and new seedlings in same tent.
Spaced a couple weeks apart in growth so i can harvest oldest and repeat.
