BHO trim run, best way?

About to harvest this GSC and it looks like it will be some awesome trim. I want to do a BHO trim run, blast with 2" tube with 2 300ml cans each run. Question is whats the best way to prepare the trim. Semi moist, dry or really dry? Also should I break it all down to smaller pieces or try to keep everything whole so i don't loose trichs? I've done some previous runs before with decent yield but nothing great. Want to get the most out of this frosty leaf.

Depends on what you want to end up with. I prefer to pull the fan leaves and hang until the small stems snap before extracting, but also sometimes extract with fresh frozen.
Last BHO I ran came out good and waxy but after I purged it, it was more of a crumble. I like wax so I guess I purge less with heat and more with vac??

Dry trim, put in the freezer over night put the cans in the freezer over night ,blast then vac purge at 115 degrees with a vac of 29-30hg

Temperature may have been your issue here.

I do extractions using dry trim. I blast into round bottom flasks and let the butane evaporate. You should not need to heat the oil to remove the butane. I blast 300mL butane into roundbottom flask. I add a few mL ethanol (Everclear 190 proof). I let evaporate with a fan blowing over it. When it gets close to finishing I warm the flask (warm water). After that I dry it on a vacuum pump. If you need to heat use a warm water bath. Always end up with pale honey consistency.

The role of the ethanol is to drive all of the butane out. The only trace of solvent that you now have in your oil is ethanol.

Does ethanol have the same effect on pentane?

Yes, azeotropes at 34C

Watch with pentane that you get decent purity or distill it before. Pentane can have traces of plasticizers and other higher boiling point impurities. The only reason I use butane and ethanol is that it is easy to get high purity.

Oh wow, who would you say is the best to get it from?

Do you have any links to verify this as I'd like to use it if it's for real? I'm about to do a big batch of BHO with a bunch of sugar trim and popcorn I've had sealed up in the freezer for a while and will add my last batch of trim to it. Two flat-bottom boiling balls, coil of copper tubing and a deep freeze. Distillation of the butane for re-use to get a lot more pot processed from a few cans. No storage for it tho so have to do it all in one batch. Many small batches in a row actually. About 2oz of pot per.

I need to buy some EverClear anyways as part of the Beam's tests I want to do on my CBD strains to verify there is actually CBD in the crosses I'm going to make over the next year or so. Especially on the one Otto#1 CBD girl I'm going to be using for the crosses. I'd like to send samples of her out for lab testing just to see how much CBD she actually produces. Supposed to be <1%THC and up to 27% CBD but could and likely is much lower than 27 but how do you know? Can't tell by how high you get but it really seems to work on my joint pain. Doesn't yield worth shit but I just want those CBD genes if I can ferret them out.

What kind of gear can you use just to test for CBD/THC? HPLC? Thinking of starting a small testing lab just to do that for all the soon-to-be-legal pot growers up here in Canukistan. Hopefully get set up at home for 50G or less. Lots of used gear out there and would just need to get trained on it somewhere. Been a while. :)

Unless you are pulling live plants, dry your material as well as you can before you start...
Like, use a food dehydrator if you have one...

Attached is a link for the azeotrope table for ethanol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azeotrope_tables Butane is not listed but pentane is listed. Given that butane has a boiling point of -0.5C the azeotrope temperature of butane will be well below the boiling point of ethanol.

To quantitatively determine CBD and THC content you can use HPLC with a UV detector https://www.shimadzu.eu/sites/default/files/018_cbd_hemp_oil_b.pdf You will need CBD and THC standards.

Setting up your own test lab without the technical background is a very steep ask. HPLC has high maintenance costs and requires access to restricted solvents and equipment. There are quite a few small labs in Canada that are licensed to test cannabis products https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/list-licensed-dealers.html A lot of these labs offer testing to the public and when legalization occurs you could access these labs. We get testing of oil products done at an accredited laboratory at a cost of $40 per sample.

Fresh. Frozen.
This really depends on your extraction solvent. Water interferes with butane extraction as the two solvents are not miscible. For butane extractions completely dried and ground product is the best.
Ethanol extractions can be done with fresh or dried product. The freezing breaks down the cell wall of the cannabis and increases extraction yield. I prefer dried and ground but that is just me.
