HPS with LED

Hello this is my first post here I was wondering what people here think of using HPS lights with LED mixed in. Right now I currently have one 600w HPS Lumatek with a Lumatek bulb. The room is roughly 11Lx7Wx7H in size. I will soon have around 8-10 plants in this room. There is another 5x5 room for veg with one no name 90w LED UFO that was cheap off amazon a while back. Even though it uses red, blue and yellow... LEDs it seems to be working great. From my research I have now found that orange or yellow isn't really in the usable spectrum. I have really been looking into the new Lighthouse Blackstar 100w LED lights on eBay. I would like to save on electricity and cut down on heat so that is why I am looking at adding two of the Lighthouse Blackstar 100w LED lights instead of another HPS. I am interested in what people here think about using LED lights to supplement HPS. If anyone uses a similar setup let me know how it works. Would it be better to add one single higher wattage LED rather then two smaller ones? I would like to evenly distribute the light over all of the plants. That is why I thought two would be better so I can have one on either side of the HPS for the time being. What I am looking for is the nice solid dense nugs with good nice yield of the HPS. Funds are a definite issue at the moment so I am trying to get the best bang for my buck until I can afford more.

Hey blunthc,
I did 2 grows with one HPS400w and three 90w UFOs as supplements. The area that received the HPS and the LED light were much, much fatter heavier buds. They kept pushing out pistils longer too. I was really impressed by the combination. BUT, to supplement the entire area would not really be feasible for me. The LEDs just have to be too close and it takes too many to make it worth it for me. It's also a lot of hardware for a small space. If you could arrange them so it works for you and get the LEDs close enough, I think you will be pleased with the results.
I suggest you try it for yourself. You will get opinions that are all over the place when it comes to LEDs.
:peace:

I'd be wary of blackstar man. The advertised wattage is not what you actuall receive. See above.

That being said they are cheap, if all you're looking for is side lighting. I went with a more reputable company for my leds that I have as top lighting, but am honestly considering picking up two of their 100w units as purely side lighting. I suspect they actually draw somewhere in the neighborhood of 60-70w including fan power.

I've also been checking out the new ufo from HTG they seem like a good company. The only thing that I don't like is that they don't list the actual spectrum of the less that they sell. From what I have read on here its not to great anyways. The 600hps works great just what's going now are some no names. I would just like to get some more light in there for the good quality girls. The next ones will be all blue widow and hopefully some super lemon haze. I have one bw and one slh starting to flower under the 90w led and after a week or so they look great so far. I'm going to move them under the hps as soon as the crap is out of there and can get the room cleaned.

Can anyone say what brands of the 90w led ufos are good? The blackstar 100w seems like the best for the money from what I've found. I am just curious how the 50 2w or 45 2w bulbs compare to the 90 1w bulbs. I know none of them run at full power or draw their rated wattage but I understand why they don't. Does anyone have any idea or experience with the difference between more of the 1w bulbs vs less of the 2w or 3w bulbs?

I have a 90w 2 diode unit from led wholesalers (ebay based company), it does not hold a candle to the 180w 3 diode Pro Grow from hydroponics hut. There is a legitimate difference. That being said LED wholesalers has an "F" better business bureau rating and a mile long laundry list of customer complaints so who knows if my "2w" diode unit really is 2w.

I have a small grow closet. 5'tall, 3' wide and 2.5' deep. I have a 250 watt HPS hanging down from the top and 2 LED panels, one on each side. I'm a first time grower and very happy with the plants so far. I'm about 2 or 3 weeks away from cutting them. I think the mix of HPS and LED works very well. Here are pictures of my two plants. Vanilla Kush and LSD

My roommate was checking out them type of panels at first. I just thought that they are to low of power. At 45 watts they just seem to low of power bulbs. I guess no matter what any additional light helps. They are really cheap so I guess a bunch of them wouldn't hurt anything lol. I still think I would prefer the higher power leds.

Absolutletly !!! I wish I could afford higher wattage LED's. I got both of mine for $40. I'm gonna get a couple of real good one's before my next grow.
Any idea where the cheap one's are? They are so damn expensive.

I've been looking at the 100w blackstar on ebay for like 140. I just wonder about their quality and longevity. I haven't seen anyone on here use them really. They seem to be very reasonably priced. I do have one other 90w ufo led but it's a no name china one. I would just like more light in the right spectrums.

Yeah well for 330 bucks for a ufo they can go suck a d. I got my light with a tent for 365 shipped. Oh and ive seen some pretty good harvests with blackstars as I said ill be running a 150 hps with mine and only a few plants so it should be more than enough for me.

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question. I'm a noob grower. Until the cost of LED's come down, why not just hang some CFL's for supplemental light? Seems like it could be cheaper than LED's, easier to position them around the plants for increased coverage, and still save on heat and electricity.

I'm planing on starting a 4 to 6 plant tent soon. I'm thinking of using a 400w HPS my friend gave me with 8 or 10 CFL's hung nice and close around the outside (pointing in toward the center).

I would rather use LED because they provide the exact spectrum's the plants use. Also LED's run much cooler then CFL's and the 600wHPS pumps out a bunch of heat so I want to avoid adding more. I am not sure what the spectrum is on CFLs I just know the K temps of them are like warm, daylight and then cool. I just think for what will be under the 600wHPS it will be to many for just the one. Really idealistically I would just use 2 or 3 600HPS If I can get the same results by adding the LEDs to supplement the one 600HPS that would be awesome. I just really love the idea of longer lifetime of LEDs compared to the lifetime of the HPS bulbs and of course LED using less power.
