build a grow closet

This is a how to

When I 1st built my grow closet, I looked all over to find another to model it after. This is not my grow closet, and in fact siince building this closet, I quickly outgrew it. I now use something different, but that's another tutorial altogether, which I'd like to call, "how to talk your wife out of her walk-in closet" lol

This may need fine tuning to suit your needs, and/or may cost less if you already have a light or wharever.

Moving on, you can take all or parts of this tutorial to suit your needs and desires. Total approximate cost to build this closet is about $300.00 of course the cost will vary according to where and what you do buy. The other side of the coin is simply this, if you really want to embark on indoor growing, I think that $300.00 is a minimum investment into this. Having spent this money, you'll be assured of respectable results.

1 - 400w HPS www.htgsupply.com w/ reflector @ $119.00
The light pictured in the tutorial is not the same light as listed above,
The manufacturer of the pictured light is not around anymore. Hence I substituted htgsupply for the other light kit.
2 - 60Hx30Wx16D Pantry Closet Kits @ $45 each.
2 - 90 CFM Bathroom Fan @ $20 (I paid $12.00 at home depot)
1 - Tube of Caulk @ $2
3 - Hardware Items @ $6 all.
1 - In/Out Digital Temp and Humidity Gauge @ $15
1 - 19"x21" Piece of Glass @ $5

This is what you get when you order the "wired" kit. Works great.

First I laid out all the pieces. I was my plan to combine the two closets in to one large closet. I thought about all the various options so I wouldn't make a mistake. After coming up with a good plan, I started.
First I joined the corners together. All joints
were caulked. The goofey screws and allen wrench included made me curse a few times.

Caulked all the seams too.

The back section of the cabinet a made by securely attaching the doors to the rear of the cabinet.

Another view.
6.jpg

Hey, thats just an unassuming closet.
7.jpg

Here's the inside.
8.jpg

Now, its time to start on the air cooled light and ventilation system. First I cut out an hole in two of the shelves that came with the kit to accomodate my reflector.
9.jpg

I attached the two shelves together. I installed the sides of the hood box. A access door, and a 3" to 4" flange mounted at rear to accept bathroom fan.
10.jpg

Then I used weather stripping around the edge of the xtra thick glass to form a tight seal, and attached with mirror hanging hardware.
11.jpg

I then attached the 90 CFM bathroom fan to the duct. This will (hopefully) vent the growroom and the light as well.

Light assembly installed.
13.jpg

Bzzzzz. Hmmmm. Whrrrr.
14.jpg

Still need to mount the gauges, mylar (waiting for mylar xmas paper to become available) and intake fan (going under shelf on rear panel).
15.jpg

Oh, thats nothing. Thats just a wardrobe closet.

Actually I think this light may be better suited, and it already has the glass in place,
and a better bulb too.

Seriously that shows people that you can save money, be inventive, be stealth and have a good looking product at the same time. This is one of the best posts one the subject I have seen. Should be a sticky!

Damn! What an impressive grow box. I'm building my own now and I WISH I had consulted with you first. I bought this from HD and it ran me $55! Now I see where your's cost you $45 and is much taller than mine, which is about 3' tall. I've already installed my exhaust fan and will be installing the lights (CFLs) this weekend. I guess the advantage of mine being plastic is that I may have to take it outside in the backyard and it will be weather resistant, after I seal it up.

damn it video, now that is a stealthy and professional set up for once:o what about ventilation for the HPS since this may get hot at some point wit it, what would you think about two additional pc fans up in there for it with a exit to the rear end of the closet?:)

Hey green....it does have an exhaust, dont ya see it? Of course you can alter this to suit your needs too.
Peace

Video, I see in your bill of materials you have two bathroom fans but I only see where you only installed one. Where does the other one go?

very nice. only just spotted this with the threads reemergence. post more pics when mylar/intake fan is installed for aesthetic value?

The fan IS installed. Why does everyone keep asking that, it is in plain sight....maybe it's me, here you go.....

very impressive video, i never would have thought to do something like this, and you would never suspect anything other than clothes was in it, i think many people are going to find this helpful with the next crop they decide to grow, i know i sure am. thanks a lot video.

may there always be a nug in your bowl

WOW! Very nice. Brilliant!
This idea could have prevented me from turning a full bath into a half bath. Of course, I've had at least 30 people over, and they never noticed while on the shitter, they're 6" way from a grow room!

Great tutorial, VM. I've already outgrown my box. Next go-around, I am following this tutorial. Looks like it can only accomodate 3 plants max, though, so you have to hope at least 1 is a female and makes it all the way to harvest. I started out with 7 plants and looks like I am down to 4 now. Of course, it could just be my own incompetence.

would it be a better idea to put the intake at the bottom and the exhaust at the top sine the heat rises? how many plants MAX could you fit in this, also is a 4x5 closet enough for 15 plants??
