What brings out the smell?

A good healthy plant that's getting all the nutrients and light it needs in the right quantities.
This to start..
Always start with the best genetics you can get your hands on.. grow till they're ripe.. do not, I repeat, do not chop early..
. Lastly, a nice slow dry followed by a long cure and you'll never be disappointed.. :)

As already stated, start with good, proven genectics if your looking for smell. Some of the best buds I've ever smoked in my life had hardly any smell or much taste to them. I realize what the majority of consumers out there are looking for and understand. I only grow for personal so I only have satisfy my wants. But it is all about genectics. GL.

I can tell you in 1 word.... PATIENCE
patient enough to let plant veg long enough
patient enough to not force feed them 50 different snake oils they don't need
patient enough to let them properly ripen
patient enough to dry right, and keep your damn fingers out of the jars til they're cured.
Damn, that was more than 1 word huh? Oh well, you get the idea. lol where's my damn bowl.

Odd thing...I've puchased countless pounds from ops and dealers. non of them ever passed me a bunch of glass jars.
but then I live in Canada.

On the other side of the coin...I've brought a few lbs to the cheeses also, no glass jars involved in any of that either. The old women at the bargain shop love the smell of our weed regardless of the strain. These old women don't know that the smell is in my pocket and not something you spray on:) Bad for cops though.

That's probably because it's supposed to be cured before it hits the dispensary. I bet what they have on display is in jars.
