More Pots or Bigger Pots?

I cannot fit six, five gallon containers into my space 2' X 3' 400w HID. Which plant configuration will provide the best harvest potential?

A) Leave the six plants in existing three gallon containers.

B) Remove two plants (my flowering auto diesel and unsexed bag seed) from the grow and transplant the remaining four into five gallon containers.

What's your opinion?

Huh?.....im confused a little...u have 6in there now n wanna upsize the pots and they wont fit?....bigger pots less plants is always better in my opinion ...bigger pots bigger roots better plants bigger buds....buds w more character...etc....everythings better w more root space....so I think 4plants in that space is plenty

Imo for ur next run just do two...two plants in 5-7gallon pots.....two plants in that space w a 400 and w cfl supplements would be perfect......

My plan was to transplant from 1gal, 3gal, to 5gal pots with four plants. I threw six seeds into this grow and all have survived. I have too many plants for the space and hate to kill two of them unless I see an advantage.

Swings and roundabouts generally.

However the lighting being used can determine what will be best, followed by strain. With just a 400w light i would personally be growing more smaller plants due to the light penetration etc, unless you are capable of creating a good even canopy. You need to grow your plants in accordance with your lighting. E.g you would not try and grow a big plant with cfls, a huge amount of the plant would end up getting no usable light.

hmm I would still think the 4 quality seed`s you have going should be repotted up in to them 5g and keep the auto in the 3g in the middle and hope she finish before you run out of space, skip the bag seed or give it away, or finish here under a CLFs

How long did you veg them?
Sorry, I forgot.
If you took out the auto and unsexed, where would you put them/ what would you do with them?
Just a note, that last one I did, I vegged for 30 days, and by finish, the roots were filled to the rim of the pot, but only about 8" deep.
I still had plenty of room, and you remember how long it took in flower.:wall:
**subbed
Note: on that, I would leave them in the 4 gals. and keep all if you think you can manage the foliage later on, but remembering how much mine filled out when she got older, I think you're really be better off with just 4.

Select the best four n run those....ive made the mistake of starting too many for my space before....also just an idea I run mine straight from seedling cups to finishing pots....eliminates mid transplanting....so yeah bro pick ur best four n toss the other two....focus on the four best lookin ones and youll do better than trying to manage 6in that space...thats what id do anyhow

I would keep the four with the most potential, and get them to give you more than the 6 would have by working with them a little. Like Mr.Vega said bigger roots better buds in the end. The longer you veg and get them ready for flower the better the terpenes and oils and trich's in the end. When your plants grow vertically you pull them back down, and open them up. Just work with them a little and they will reward you whole heartedly. Take it easy bro. Peace out.

Thanks for the input fellas. I'm running a stealth operation so not many options to grow outside the closet. I do have a veg cabinet, but I'm afraid the summer heat could be an issue running both at the same time.

I can keep the auto in the 3 gal and move the four to 5 gal when it's time and see if there is enough space. If not, throw the auto into the veg cabinet and let her finish up early in there?

The plants are at 6 1/2 weeks veg.

could easily finish the auto in there the last week to 10 days I'm sure, once the bud´s stopped swelling

I did the same thing as u first couple grows....trying to squeeze four five plants in a 3by 3 space....now I grow one bush in that space...2648573d1368071124-french-cannoli-hash-thread-20130508_173205.jpeg....I may go back to two plants in the space but point being it took me a couple grows to grasp the importance of roots and root space and to see the diff in yeild and over all quailty of the plant in general w a big thriving rootball w lots of space....I use 7gallon smart pots and ny yields have damn near doubled....its all abt the roots man....big roots-big trunk-big strong plant w big strong buds....

I would much rather have a couple of big bushes with a bunch of tops, than 6 plants with single tops. I also like to veg my plants at least 2 months to get the thing in proper shape and maturity to flower. Everybody here is pretty much of one mind on this it seems. It all boils down to personal preference and growing area in the end though. Peace out.

I tried 6 in my closet 2x4x8 and it was too much (under 400 hps)....ran out of space, air flow issues, etc. Brought it down to 4 and that was much better, did 3 with and my yields were basically the same. Now I am down to two plants with bigger pots longer veg and training. Going from Solo Cup to 2 gal to 5 gallon smartpot. Nice bush Vega! Only issue with having one plant would be if something happens you have no other plants to fall back on plus it is nice have a couple different strains going.
