UK Grower - General Questions

Hi, this is my 2nd attempt at growing - I killed the first load of seedlings by over watering / stretching for light but I now (I think) know what I am doing as these ones have gone a lot further.

I am using a 1 x 250 watt blue spectrum bulb - I am planning on getting a 250 watt red spectrum for the flowering stage. Would this be enough or should I look into bigger wattage? This is just a small home grow for personal use and I am only growing 5 plants so I do not want to go overboard with the moneyz..

I would like to know when to start vegging nutes and what is the best but cheapest to buy and the same goes for the flowering stage. Remember I am from the UK so I won't have access to a walmart :P.

I also have in my posession sum chicken pellets and bonemeal - when will I be able to make use of these?

Thanks in advance!

For 5 good sized plants you really need a 600w hps with extraction but you could pull it of with a 400w hps with extraction.
I am in the U.K as well.

Ok, well I'm happy to buy a 400w bulb but are there any out there that do not require a ballast? Also, what about the questions I asked about nutes ~

No hps lamps must be wired through a ballast.
as for nutes i use miracle grow powder and my soil is nute free top soil.
No nutes for the first 2 weeks and then start with the miracle grow at 1/4 strength every time i water/feed then up the dosage slightly weekly ending up at the end of vegg feeding them about 2/3 strength before flowering. Never go full strength with miracle grow as its very high in NPK.
I find miracle grow exellent for vegging and have never had anything but sucsess using it CAREFULLY.

well if you are growing personally why dont you get 2 250w cfl 2700k (red) for a personal stash this would be ok if you dont want to spend alot of money and another good nute that i am currently using is baby bio

cool, i actually have that exact box so that saves me going out and buying something else. How exactly does a ballast work because I researched it a while ago and it seems that you have to hard wire it which sounds quite dangerous but a friend of mine bought one last week and he said the bulb just plugs into the ballast. Confused.

EDIT: yeah I have been using baby bio at the moment but just a very small amount as they are little and I don't want to burn them.

You can buy an expensive ballast thats ready wired but you can buy a ballast for around £30 (at any light or electrical shop) and the flex cable for £10 fit a plug wire it up and you are ready to go. There is many ways to wire them up depends what ballast you have. If it just has a live and a neutral then its real easy.

I am quite liking the idea of just buying another 250w red spectrum bulb - would this be sufficient enough? 2 x 250w bulbs + 5 plants. I also do not know what sex they are yet so I could have less plants soon.

it will produce bud but not as much as hps bulbs would, the buds you will get will be light and fluffy, you could get 2 250watt bulbs so then you have 3 that will help increase yeild.

2= 250w hps red spectrum lamps will be fine but i would go for a 400-600w dual spectrum hps so you can use the same bulb from sprout to harvest without any need to mess around changing bulbs.
