Can't Figure Out Carbon Scrubbers...

As you can guess, I'm new to this forum and new to growing. It's overwhelming at first with all the information here, but after a couple of days of reading I think I'm about ready.

The only part I can't quite figure out is carbon scrubbers, I have a few questions about them actually.

First off, I'm planning on doing a closet grow in my room. Dimensions are roughly 7'x3'x8'. I think that sounds right, but correct me if that sounds off.

Anyways, firstly I'm curious of how carbon scrubbers would work and how they would work for my situation? I have the basic concept down that the air is filtered through carbon to neutralize or eliminate any odors your plants produce. However, mostly I've seen people setting these up in tents.

How would I apply a carbon scrubber to my closet space and what would be the best option for a carbon scrubber as in DIY or buying one from the internet or a school.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You would use it the same way it is applied in a tent. Filter near the top and exhausting out of the room. If you are using air cooled hoods you would generally go Filter>fan>hood>exhaust. I had used a DIY for a small space and it worked okay. Not well. The tall boy I have now works much better. Given your space and the amount of plants you have potential for in there, you would be hard pressed to make a DIY filter to handle it adequately without spending a comparable amount to buying one. Some places have fan/filter combo deals (like HTG - where I got mine) if you don't have a fan already.

Ok, so that makes sense, the part I think I'm hung up on is where does the exhaust go. Like in a tent it's all sealed and the exhaust runs out the tent, so does it not matter that my closet isn't all sealed up? Like could I leave the closet doors open?

actually, a scrubber is just a carbon filter that doesn't exhaust out of the grow area. it pulls the air that's in the room, through the scrubber and exhausts it back into the room instead of out of the room. i.e. scrubber....

Oh gotcha, so I can set it up like meetzu said: Filter>fan>hood>exhaust and have that just hanging over my plants in the closet and it will filter air throughout my room and eliminate the odor?

I plan on doing 2, maybe 3 plants for my first grow. So I'm assuming a single carbon scrubber as mentioned from HTG should be able to handle those 2 to 3 plants?

2-3 in that space is much less than I imagined you would be doing. a HTG one would do fine. I have the tall boy and something like 30 going. with only 2-3 you could likely get away with a DIY depending on the design you choose.. though if it is inadequate there are other inexpensive options to supplement it. Eg. ONA gel if the DIY filter isn't enough on its own.

The only reason I'm opposed to using ONA gel is because I've heard it gives your buds an undesirable taste in the end and I don't know if I want to take that risk ha.

I've attached a picture of my closet because I probably was misleading about posting the size of my closet when I only plan on using one shelf of it for my grow area. (The ruler is there to give a feel for the size of the shelving area ha )

The shelf pictured is a little over 3 ft tall, 1 ft deep and about 2 1/2 ft wide. I'll probably be able to fit two plants on that shelf, hopefully it is tall enough. I'm beginning to worry that it may not be with the lights hanging there as well, any suggestions?

Anyways, I think a carbon filter from HTG should be able to ventilate that area just fine. I'm looking at getting this combo, anyone bought this before or know if it's a quality filter/fan combo?

Thanks again everyone for bearing with all the questions!

That fan/filter will work just fine but it might not fit in your closet, being only a foot deep. Hopefully the filter is less than a foot in diameter.....

Your also gonna need to take out that shelf and use all the height available....

I figured that would be my best option, thanks for all the help everyone, hopefully I can get a successful first grow!

The HTG filters are right around a foot in diameter for the smallest ones.. Check the length too. Mine is like 3-3.5 feet long and about a foot around. Best of luck.
