i hate this question. it doesn't HAVE to be facing a certain way. taproots are made to orient themselves. in nature do seeds randomly fall or do plants carefully place them underground facing a certain way? i'm pretty sure the plant knows what its doing better than any of us could hope to.
(ps. i didn't mean to sound offensive if i came off that way.)

Well, that's a bit like saying if you drop a cat upside down it will fall on it's feet but that doesn't mean the cat likes it. I can lend support to your statement though since I've had seeds where the tap root grows up and down and sideways all at once.
That being said it's best to put the tap root down so the plant doesn't have to grow around it and try to move itself back around to the up position.

planted them 2 inches like an idiot, i dug up the top layers of soil about 3 hours ago, till i could see the leaves, then i put a tiny layer over them, because they should be up soon.
there about half a centimeter from the surface, hope i didn't damage them too much by spooning out the soil around them
I'm sure there are 101 reasons not to do it this way but I germinate until the root is about 2 full inches long and plant it with the root down and the shell of the seed sticking a little out of the dirt. That way I can moniter the growth immediately and help the shell peel off by hand when it is ready. When i do this you can see the growth within 24 hours.
