Better to use Jobe's Organics time release granules sprinkled sparingly on around the edge of your pot. Jobe's has sulpher, it keeps the ph a little lower.

Looks like you got mold on top of your soil from overwatering and not enough light or air circulating. Try a wider pot that's not too deep and don't water too often. Blowing a fan the opposite direction will suck out the flying nats that try to breed in moldy top soil.

I think it's your soil. Try the potting soil for African Violets. Like that stuff. Get a shallow wide pot. They need a shorter depth for better drainage or you will have a hard time drying out the soil and get root rot. The roots need oxygen and get smothered in too much compacted wet dirt.
