If you don't want an RO system try finding a place that refills your empties. A place near me is $1.50 per 5 gals of water. Still have to cart it to and fro, but you're doing that already.

One of the strains I grow is a sativa. I get less weight than my indica. However it usually comes down a week sooner. You can try to control the height by slowly dropping out your grow nute (Floragrow if using GH) and also a big trim on the fan leaves once you are close to the height you want...

On my sativas I cut less fan leaves off. On indicas I generally cut off more fan leaves because they are larger. I do this in order to help airflow, prevent powdery mildew, and allow light to parts below. Trimming too much is not a great idea as it can stunt growth.

I'd wait until you can sex them. No sense making male clones. Once you know the sex you can clone when ever you need them keeping the rule of thumb not to take more than 1/3 of the plant.
