That's only assuming your plant isnt elevated high enough out of your tray however. If the plant is kept high enough off the tray the roots will never sit in the runoff. I see what you mean though.

I defoliate every grow before switching to flower. Never had this problem. I'd be reluctant to say a 400 watt hps is providing it with too much lumens.
It gets about 4 gallons per feeding at the moment. About 1 gallon tends to run through that way. It's currently in a 10 gallon pot, brought up from a 3 gallon maybe 3 weeks ago.
