Hey merc yea that's correct you just cut the main steam of the plant right below the new growth, making sure to take away all top growth, but leave the top 2 side branching as these will be your new tops :)

Sounds to me like your plant is stretching, how far is your your light from the top of your plant?

It doesn't sound like a problem with your light, any chance of a picture? How big is your baby? also check for bugs under the leafs man.
