I've grown from seed for decades and never orient the seed in any way when I plant, I've only had it happen once.

I think the lack of sulfur from acid rain has decreased the available sulfur in the soil, and sulfur is responsible for a lot of skunk terps. But, you can change the pH, or amend the soil with however much sulfur you want, the old skunk genetic expressions are not found in the current strains.
